For most of you, it may be Choti Diwali for Bengalis, it is Bhoot Chaturdashi, a day to ward off evil spirits. Yes, it is a Halloween festival in India that is celebrated every year during the five-day festival of Deepawali. Bhoot Chaturdashi is also known as Naraka Chaturdashi or Kali Chaudas, Roop Chaudas or Chhoti Diwali. It falls on the 14th day of Krishna Paksha in the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar month of Kartik. This year, Bhoot Chaturdashi is falling on 26 October, which is today and there are many other interesting facts which you may not know.     • Many types of ghosts are frequently encountered in Bengali culture. Damori, Basho, Penchapechi, Mekho, Skandhokta, Boba, Nishi and Rakhosh are some of the names that appear in Bengali folklore.
    • On the night of Bhoot Chaturdashi, the Bengalis lit 14 earthen lamps in their homes to pacify the spirits of the ancestors of their last fourteen generations.
  • It is said that on this day, the departed souls come to Earth to meet the people near them. Earthen lamps help them find their homes and prevent evil spirits from entering.
  • Goddess Kali, with a frightening aspect of Chamunda, drives away 14 other ghostly evil spirits from the house as 14 earthen lamps are lit in every corner of the house.
  • On Bhoot Chaturdashi, it is customary to consume a dish made of 14 types of leafy vegetables (Chodo Shak), so that evil spirits cannot enter the body.
