As per a legend, there were once two demon brothers – Mani and Malla – who were troubling demigods, sages, and human beings. Tired of the disturbance, they sought help from Lord Shiva. It was then he took the form of Khandoba.

With the appearance of shining gold and face covered with turmeric, the deity of Khandoba took on the demon brothers, and a fierce battle ensued for six days. The brothers finally accepted their defeat and offered Lord Shiva as a truce. Lord Shiva, being happy, then offered them a boon. Mani said that he would want to live with him (Lord Shiva). To fulfil their wish, the idol of Mani is installed in all Khandoba temples. To celebrate this occasion, the festival of Champa Shashthi is observed.
