Chhath Puja 2019: These Muslim Artisans Have Been in Chulha-making Business in Bihar for Decades

Patna, October 29: Chhath Puja, celebrated with enthusiasm by Hindus in Bihar, is also much awaited by those in the Muslim community who are engaged in making earthen chulhas (chulhas) for the festival. According to tradition, devotees prepare prasadam and offerings for Chhath Maiya on clay stoves and thus the stoves are quite important for worshipers. Birchand Patel Path is home to many Chola makers from the Muslim community, who say that they prepare chulhas, are made with great reverence and take care to ensure that there is no error. These vendors are not new to the business and are carrying on the legacy of their families. "My parents were in the same business and that's why I'm taking their legacy forward here. Now, for two decades we've been making utensils. For the festival," she said.

Sanja Khatoon, who also displays her stoves on the Patel Path in the city, said: "I have been involved with business for a decade now. My father-in-law used to make utensils earlier and today we make around 80-100 bangles." And the sales are satisfactory. There is no Hindu-Muslim in it.

"Mohammed Nizam, who has been in business for more than four decades, shared that his festival is similar to that of Hindu devotees. One customer Ramji Prasad expressed pride, "What could be better than people from other communities that they too are playing their part in the Hindu festival." This year, Chhath Puja will be celebrated from the evening of November 13 to the morning of November 14.
